(More customer reviews)First, I will say this filter did clean my 75 gallon's water within a day, working in conjunction with my Penguin 200.
However, there are several downsides to this filter that I learned in the past couple days of running it.
1) The motor is indeed silent. However, the water splashing into the filter's body is VERY loud. I lay in bed listening to what sounded like a waterfall going in the next room. Yes, I had the water level in the tank well within the specified inch from the top. It still was loud. I suppose if you're one that likes to go to sleep with a nature machine playing, you won't mind this issue. I'm not one of those.
2) The profile is NOT slim. The pump in front makes it much wider there than either my Penguin or my old Whisper3. I really shouldn't have to move my lid in order to fit my filter.
3) The intake tube has its own built-in extension. This is a very nice feature. However, the tube falls out pretty easily. It fell out while I was placing it in the tank. No, I didn't bump it. Then I needed to shift it over a couple inches--the tube fell out again. Next morning, one of my koi had knocked it out. Now, it's not Aqueon's fault my koi like to swim behind everything in their tank. But it shouldn't be that easy for them to displace the intake tube, either.
4)I watched it after plugging it in. The self-priming is indeed a very wonderful feature. Sucked in the water, stirred up the fine debris, started pulling it in. But then I noticed it didn't always pull in larger debris. I watched one piece pass close to the intake tube several times before it must've come just that fraction closer and finally got sucked in.
5) Missing features
--no intake adjustment. It sucks at top speed. Period.
--the bottom portion of the intake tube is NOT removable. This makes cleaning the intake tube much less convenient or easy.
--the filters are NOT open. Meaning you can't add more or different media.
I decided that although the filter did work fine, I couldn't stand the noisy waterfall sound, nor the absense of an intake adjustment, nor especially that the intake tube is so easy to knock out. It went back to Petland, who let me exchange it for a Tetra Whisper 30-60 filter (same as my old Whisper3).
I allowed myself to get distracted by the bright new shiny. I should've just stuck with the old stand-by workhorse that I've used for years with very few issues.
