(More customer reviews)I have a white housing type on-deck filter that ties into the kitchen faucet. Turn the diverter (remember, COLD WATER only) and out pours good, clean, chlorine-free water. Our normal water is like a swimming pool. Very high in chlorine.
This replacement filter has good instructions--very careful to let you know how NOT to install it upside down, and how to lubricate the housing to make sure you can get the housing open when you need to change the filter. What the instructions don't say is how to open the housing. It can stick and be hard to unscrew. So here's how: pour hot water from the tap plus some white vinegar into a bowl and soak the housing for five minutes or so. This will loosen the housing from the base.
A filter like this should last a family of four about a year--but we cook with this water and pretty much use a lot of it, so for two people, it will last us about a year and half. The water gets a bit metallic tasting when it's reaching capacity.
Remember, this will not remove fluoride. There are not a lot of good solutions for that issue (sad to say, our town started fluoridating water, despite the evidence this doesn't help teeth and does contribute to thyroid disease.) It would be easier to ADD fluoride if you wanted it, almost impossible to remove without RO (reverse osmosis), or an alumina substrate which then adds aluminum ions to the water, which you also don't want. You can also distill, but then you have to restore the right salts, and distillation takes energy.
